Dreams From My Father by Barack Obama

With less than a week to go until the next American President is decided, The Media Book Club brings you Barack Obama’s Dreams from My Father, a chance for readers on this side of the Atlantic to get to know the man who is potentially the first African-American U.S. President. The son of a black African father and a white American mother, Obama was only two years old when his father walked out on the family. The book proceeeds from his childhood in Hawaii, to his community work in Chicago and finally to his journey to meet his relatives in Kenya before he attends Harvard. Oona King said of Obama’s first book, ‘whatever else people expect from a politician, it’s not usually a beautifully written personal memoir steeped in honesty. Barack Obama has produced one.’ (The Times 15.9.07)

For those of you that have also been enjoying Fry’s latest offering from the BBC here’s your chance to get that extra fix. Fry’s search for the ‘real’ America takes him across every one of the 50 states all with the help of a London black cab (very quaint!). This beautifully illustrated book accompanies the series by providing that extra dose of his unique humour and insight. Stephen Fry’s In America airs on BBC 1, Sundays at 9pm.
