Closure of The Media Bookshop

28 April, 2011

I’ve taken the reluctant decision to close The Media Bookshop due to lack of support from the company that ran the site on our behalf.
The Media Bookshop was launched primarly as a extra service for our community of journalists, PR professionals and marketing specialists. Soon after launching the site we found that some customers using the popular Firefox browser, which is used by around 30 per cent of our audience, were unable to complete their transactions on The Media Bookshop.
We alerted this issue to the book wholesaler that ran the site and fulfilled orders on our behalf but after 18 months no progress had be made to resolve the issue and the company was unable to say when it would be sorted. Also, little had been done to develop the site in general during this time.
We felt this reflected badly not only on The Media Bookshop but on our services as a whole, thefore closing the site down seemed the best thing to do.
I’m very sorry to withdraw a service which many found useful but being a staunch believer in customer service I could not continue to offer a customer experience that was fundametally flawed.
Perhaps we will re-launch The Media Bookshop in the future if we are able to find a partner that can sustain a standard of service I would be proud of.

In the meantime we’ll leave The Media Book Club site live so that people may access the content.

Shop tips

The Media Bookshop

Our online shop, The Media Bookshop, isn’t the most elegant in the world (see ‘about the shop‘), so we’ve put together some tips for using the site:

Searching

The search is not very friendly as it appears to be ‘exact match’. Searching by author seems to be the most effective way to find the book you want. Or if you know it, search by the 13-digit ISBN number (exluding hyphens or spaces).

Media categories

The main aim of the online bookshop was to provide recommended reading lists for different categories of media books. But the structure of the site does not make it easy to put a simple list of categories on there. You’ll see the full list under ‘Media books’ across the top of the site, but only five of these categories (randomly selected) appear on the left. Use the full list under ‘Media books’, or click through to each from here:

Advertising books

Broadcast books

Digital marketing books

Film books

Graphic design books

Journalism books

Marketing books

Media studies books

Photography books

PR books

Film books

Web design books

Buying

Unfortunately the checkout is not reliable with any browser other than Internet Explorer (with other browers the ’3D secure’ pop-up just comes up blank). So we strongly recommend you use IE when browsing the site, so that if you choose to buy your passage through the checkout will be uninterrupted.

We’ll add more tips as we pick up on things – please get in touch by calling 0845 370 2323 or email info@themediabookshop.com if you get stuck.
